The Wage Gap between Metropolitan and Non-metropolitan Areas

چکیده
In the literature on measured wage inequality, only one recent study, by Glaeser and Mare′ (2001), has focused on the enormous wage gap between urban and non-urban workers in the United States. In the present paper, I replicate and extend Glaeser and Mare′’s original empirical work, and I present a new interpretation of the evidence based on my re-estimation. Contrary to Glaeser and Mare′’s theory that urban employment induces more rapid skill acquisition, I find that wage growth is no greater for urban workers than for non-urban workers. I show that both the original and extended empirical patterns can be fully explained by a simple spatial equilibrium model that incorporates two highly plausible phenomena: (1) a compensating wage differential for the higher cost of living in cities and (2) a dynamic tendency for more able workers to gravitate to cities once they discover that they belong in the “big leagues.”

Prospects for service sector employment growth in non-metropolitan America.
"This paper focuses on how successfully non-metropolitan areas [in the United States] can compete for service-producing industry. Data on wage and salary employment for the 1969-84 period are used to assess how well non-metropolitan areas have been keeping up with metropolitan areas in expanding service jobs. Changes in patterns of employment growth in non-metropolitan and metropolitan servic...

Less than 20 percent of all people work in nonmetropolitan areas in the United States, and their average hourly wage is over $3 less than that of people in metropolitan areas. However, by occupation, the concentration of workers and their wages in nonmetropolitan areas vary considerably from the national averages. Overall average salaries are higher in metropolitan areas than in nonmetropolitan...

Since late 2000s, economic growth has gained increasing attention, while economic development became the ultimate objective of the national policies. Recently regional income disparities rose as a critical factor of regional development policies, as people started to recognize relative poverty from the drastic national economic growth with huge income gap between social classes. Wilkinson and P...
متن کاملA self selection analysis of employed rural-metropolitan migrants in Paraguay
Given the different income inequalities between rural, urban and metropolitan areas in Paraguay, the standard Roy model predicts the possibility that a selection bias of rural metropolitan migrants exists. Based on an extended Roy model, which allows for correlation between labor market characteristics and moving cost, I use a switching regression model to evaluate if migrants from rural to met...
متن کاملUnderstanding the City Size
In 2000, wages of full time full year workers were over 30 percent higher in metropolitan areas of over 1.5 million people than rural areas. The monotonic relationship between wages and city size is robust to controls for age, schooling and labor market experience. In this paper, we decompose the city size wage gap into various components. We propose a labor market search model that incorporate...
